19/05/10 Early Melbourne Think 1.Batman is said to have offered the indigenous people payment for their land. Why is this significant? This event is significant as it shows that he attempted and equal trade with the resources he had at the time. 2.How were Batman’s views about the rights of the indigenous people different from the views generally held by the British colonists? In my opinion he considered the Indigenous equal people because he attempted and even trade when the other British would have just took the land. 3.What longer term impact do you think this event would have had on these indigenous people? The Indigenous later learning about fair trade would of felt betrayed for the 243, 000 hectares of their sacred land. 4.Why do you think the Indigenous people Batman met might have agreed to ‘put their mark’ on his treaty? They may have agreed because they did not know they were trading in their land when they thought it was a nice gift.
